Dr Helen McKenna discussed the biological consequences of circadian rhythm disruption with the members of the Scottish Intensive Care Society (SICS) in Edinburgh, on November 13th 2018.
Intensive care doctors and nurses must act out of phase with their biological clock every time they work a night shift but, in contrast to comparable industries (aviation), receive little education or support to manage the challenges this poses for night time performance, day time sleep and the long-term health impact of circadian rhythm disruption.
